Jenna, a waitress at a diner, is financially dependent upon her immature and aggressive husband, Earl. Each day she hands her salary over to him and hopes for his charity. Secretly Jenna saves, penny by penny, and dreams of leaving him; but when she discovers that she is pregnant, Jenna's plans are lost. Surprisingly, as her unwanted pregnancy advances, she is infused with an inner confidence. Jenna embarks upon a wild affair with an enchanting gynecologist, and remembers that it is still possible to feel warmth and passion. Adrienne Shelly, with humor and irony, sketches radical characters in typical American suburbia, and creates a romantic comedy that is intelligent, sensual, rhythmic and funny, and which reaped great success at the last Sundance Festival.
