Under the Skin

UK, 1997

Iris' and Rose's mother dies shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Rose begins building a family of her own, but wistful Iris embarks on an extended journey of self-inflicted pain. Alienating her sister, friends, and boyfriend, Iris submerges herself in casual, frenzied, and out-of-control sex, all the while obsessively searching for a mysterious man whom she encountered after her mother's death.
Carine Adler has created a chilling and troubling film about the bond between sexuality and guilt; about the incomprehensible meaning of a mother in her daughter's life; about the charged relationships of sisterhood; and about desire, that crawls under the skin and stands on the threshold between life and death.
