Sita Sings the BluesUSA, 2008
Director Nina Paley combines autobiographical elements with Indian mythology: Sita, wife of the Hindi god Rama, goes with him to 14 years of exile in the woods, where an evil king kidnaps her. In spite of her fidelity, Rama puts her to infinite tests after having been released and breaks her heart. Nina, the director’s animated version, is an artist who follows her partner from New York to India, but receives from him a short good-bye email. Three scholarly amusing dolls mediate, with heavy Indian accents, between the old and the current; once in a while a jazz singer breaks with a moving song straight from the anguished hearts of Sita and Nina. Sita sings the blues is a spectacular, award-winning, multi-styles and narratives animation film. ![]() Animation | 35 mm | 82 Minutes | Color | English, Hebrew subtitles | Official Site | Trailer Screenplay: Nina Paley 19/9, 11:00 Get Tickets
